Smart Drive Technology for Package Distribution

How Budde Fördertechnik Simplifies Automation and Reduces Installation Effort with the i550 motec

In Germany, approximately 10 million packages are processed every day. In a package distribution center, conveyor routes quickly add up to kilometers in length, and they must ensure smooth operations. Budde Fördertechnik develops and implements conveyor and material flow systems for distribution and package distribution centers.

In collaboration with Budde Fördertechnik, a modern drive concept was developed for one of Germany’s largest package service providers. The system utilizes gearmotors as well as the decentralized i550 motec frequency converter with IO-Link functionality. This allows sensors and actuators to be integrated directly and automation tasks to be implemented efficiently.

High Demands on Conveyor Technology in Parcel Distribution Centers

  • Smooth conveyor operation even over conveyor routes spanning several kilometers
  • Easy integration of sensors and actuators into the conveyor system
  • High level of automation for efficient and reliable processes
  • Minimal installation effort despite complex system structures
  • High system availability for a continuous flow of packages

Benefits for automated package handling systems

  • Reduced installation, material, and labor costs
Through the direct integration of sensors and actuators into the decentralized drive.
  • Automated contour inspection
Inspection of transported goods is fully automated; manual inspection is no longer necessary.
  • IO-Link master directly in the drive
Distance sensors and other IO-Link components can be integrated directly.
  • Energy-efficient operation
Thanks to the integrated energy recovery function, braking resistors can be eliminated.
  • Higher system availability
Diagnostic data can be evaluated in the PLC, enabling potential malfunctions to be detected early.
